The everyday moment

Does Ending Screen Time Always Become a Negotiation?

You give a warning. Your child asks for five more minutes. You repeat yourself, they become disappointed, and something that should have taken one minute turns into a frustrating negotiation.

You are not failing, and your child is not "bad." Ending an enjoyable activity can feel sudden — especially when there is no clear stopping routine or next step in place.

This toolkit does not promise that transitions will always be easy. It gives you a prepared routine to return to, each time.

The Hardest Time to Find the Right Words Is in the Middle of the Moment

Sudden endings

A verbal instruction can feel abrupt when a child cannot see how much time remains.

🔄
Changing responses

When the wording and rules change every day, the ending becomes less predictable for everyone.

No clear next step

"Turn it off" explains what must stop, but not what the child can do next.

The Calmer Screen-Time Transition Kit gives you a prepared routine instead of another lecture.

The toolkit

A Simple System You Can Prepare Before Screen Time Begins

Rather than responding differently each time, the kit gives you a repeatable structure combining:

  • A warning the child can see.
  • Calm and consistent words.
  • A clear screen-free choice.
  • Reflection and adjustment over time.

A Simple Three-Step Routine

1

Prepare

Choose the warning, phrase and screen-free options you will use. Set this up once so it is ready when you need it.

2

Guide the transition

Use the visual countdown and the same short phrase when screen time is ending, so the moment feels familiar.

3

Notice and adjust

Track what helped, identify recurring patterns and improve the routine for your family over time.

Parent scripts

Know What to Say, Even When You're Tired

Keep short, calm phrases nearby for the first warning, final warning, "five more minutes," disappointment and holding the boundary — so you are not searching for words in the moment.

First warning
"You have five minutes left. When the timer rings, the screen goes off. Would you like to read or draw next?"
Final warning
"One minute left. Find a stopping place. When the timer rings, I'll help you turn it off."
Holding the boundary
"The screen is staying off. I know you're disappointed. I'm here to help you through it."

Countdown cards

Help Your Child See How Much Time Is Left

Use the 15-, 10-, 5- and 2-minute cards before showing "Time to Finish" and "Screen Time Is Finished" — so the ending arrives gradually rather than all at once.

Print the cards on paper or cardstock, cut around the borders and optionally laminate them. Punch the marked circles and place the cards on a binder ring if desired. Binder ring not included.

First/Then cards

Show What Happens First and What Comes Next

The First/Then cards provide a simple visual structure — "First: screen time finishes. Then: choose an activity." Use ready-made cards or fill in the blank cards for routines that fit your family.

These cards support a clear visual sequence. They do not guarantee a particular outcome for any individual child.

Screen-free activity-choice cards showing options like reading, drawing and playing outside
Activity-choice cards

Replace "Now What?" With a Clear Choice

Offer simple screen-free choices — reading, drawing, playing outside, having a snack, building something or having quiet time — so the child has somewhere to go after the screen goes off.

Offer two suitable choices rather than presenting every card at once. This keeps the decision simple for your child.
